Arsenal are set to rival Liverpool for Chelsea star Mason Mount this summer… as the Gunners aim to add depth in midfield after damaging 4-1 defeat to Man City that dented title hopes

- Mikel Arteta is eager to bolster his midfield after Wednesday’s bitter setback
Arsenal are keen to land Chelsea and England star Mason Mount during the summer transfer window, having identified midfield as a crucial area to invest after Manchester City’s 4-1 victory at the Etihad on Wednesday.
The league leaders relinquished their advantage in the Premier League title race as Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the crucial six-pointer, climbing to within two points of the Gunners with two games in hand.
Arsenal’s midfield, which struggled to control the one-sided affair on Wednesday, is set to undergo a significant makeover at the end of the season, with West Ham captain Declan Rice and Brighton star Moises Caicedo among those linked with moves to the Emirates.
Mail Sport understands that Mount has emerged a key target for the Gunners ahead of this summer, with Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen his midfield options ahead of another title surge next campaign.
The England international’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge has been called into question this season as he remains locked in contract talks at Chelsea.

Mail Sport revealed in November that Mount rejected a £200,000-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge in the hope of landing a salary similar to the £300-a-week wage held by England team-mate Raheem Sterling.
Both parties have yet to agree on a deal and, with Mount’s current contract set to expire next summer, an exit is becoming increasingly likely.
Meanwhile, Liverpool, who are set to oversee a major rebuild in midfield at Anfield, are believed to interested in the Chelsea man, and Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the 24-year-old.
Rice has long been considered a priority transfer target for Arsenal despite David Moyes’ insistent claims that the West Ham star would not leave for any less than a British record fee, which currently stands at £106million following Enzo Fernandez’s blockbuster move to Chelsea in January.
Arteta’s resolve to sign Rice has only been strengthened by Arsenal’s successes this season, with the club having secured Champions League football for the first time since 2016.

However, the Spaniard is weighing up whether it would be more beneficial to split Rice’s potential transfer fee across a number of positions, seeing as Arsenal have significantly missed William Saliba in defence since his back injury.
This, in theory, would only increase Mount’s chances of moving across to north London next season, with the midfielder expected to leave on a cut-price deal as a result of his ongoing contract impasse.
Arsenal are also open to shipping a handful of players in a bid to raise funds ahead of the summer, Mail Sport understands.
The Gunners are prepared to listen to offers for Reiss Nelson, Kieran Tierney and Granit Xhaka in the summer, while also selling on-loan stars Folarin Balogun and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
