West Ham and England star Declan Rice can become a world-beater at Arsenal, claims Teddy Sheringham. The former Hammers striker can only see the midfielder improving if and when he leaves the London Stadium.

Rice, who scored and shone in England’s win over Italy on Thursday, has long been linked with a move away from West Ham. His contract expires at the end of next season and a decision on his future will likely have to be made this summer.

The 24-year-old has rejected all offers of renewal to his contract to keep his options open. Rice has often been quoted at well in excess of £100million.

But Sheringham believes his former club would have to accept around £70m due to his contract situation. Asked if it is time for West Ham to cash in, Sheringham told talkSPORT: “I think you’ve got to.

“For a club like West Ham, if you think you hold onto him for another season and you don’t get anything for him, to get like £60-80m… I’d put him around that figure.

“If he had three years on his contract you’d probably have to pay £120m to get him out, but he hasn’t. He’s stayed at West Ham, he’s been very loyal but I think this summer would probably be the time when they want to cash in and get that £70m for him so they can help get other players in.”

Arsenal’s interest in Rice emerged during the January transfer window. The Gunners are flying high at the top of the Premier League and are likely to be able to offer Champions League football next term.

Sheringham believes, if Rice adds more goals to his game, he can become a world-class operator in midfield. The Spurs legend admits Rice would make Mikel Arteta’s team a better side than they already are this season.

Sheringham added: “When you’re talking about top players, you put them up against other top players. The complete midfield player would be able to defend, tackle, run forward, but score goals as well.

“If you add a couple of goals to Declan’s game, not a couple but six or seven, with what he’s got at the moment, you’re talking about an absolute world-beater of a player. He can go anywhere, wherever he goes he’s going to make that team a better team.

“Maybe Casemiro is in that role at Manchester United so perhaps they don’t need him, but he would definitely make Arsenal a better team. I don’t like to say it but they’re already good enough this season, and I don’t want to see Declan go there because he will make them a better team. He could walk into any team.”
