Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta urged to replace regular first-team starter with a new signing

Arsenal need to sign a goalkeeper to replace Bernd Leno, according to former Liverpool and Leeds defender Dominic Matteo. Leno has won back his place in the Arsenal first team following the departure of Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa. The Germany international suffered a season-ending knee injury in June to give Martinez his chance.

But Martinez could not be assured of regular game time and chose to leave the club.

Leno has started the first four games of the season for Arsenal but Matteo is not convinced about the 28-year-old.

And the pundit reckons an upgrade is needed before next Monday’s transfer deadline.

“It’s a real difficult one that isn’t it [to pick between Leno and Martinez],” Matteo told Stadium Astro.

“I don’t think any of them have been absolutely outstanding for Arsenal in truth if I’m being totally honest.

“Obviously Leno’s got his opportunity and it’s interesting what the Arsenal fans think of him.

“Every time I speak to an Arsenal fan I don’t think they’re that sure on the goalkeeping situation.

“For me personally, they’ve obviously paid a few quid for him but I don’t feel as though he’s got enough authority about him. He doesn’t seem to have that voice.

“You talk about the great goalkeepers that Arsenal have had, you always need a voice don’t you.

“That’s the most important voice for me on the football field and that’s what Arsenal are lacking. I still think they are with Leno.

“Overall I think that is an issue for Arsenal and I do think they need to get another goalkeeper in and need to get somebody in quick.”

Arsenal have signed Iceland international goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson this summer, though Leno is set to keep his No 1 spot at the Emirates.

But legendary Gunners captain Tony Adams says selling Martinez was a mistake.

“Martinez was incredible in their cup run, he was absolutely sensational,” Adams said.

“I do like big keepers and what Leno does struggle with, for me, is crosses and stuff.

“But it isn’t about me – Arteta’s gone, ‘Leno is my No 1, I like him.’ He’s put all the faith in him. I don’t believe that he’s a top-four goalkeeper, for me.

“Everything fell into place for Arsenal in the cup competition, it was like it was written in the stars.

“A keeper who has been at the club for 10 years and not played 10 games and he comes in and stops everything.

“He was a man possessed and absolutely incredible. For me Martinez was the No 1. But Arteta’s the man and he’s chosen a different goalkeeper.”
