Arsenal signing Martin Odegaard on a permanent basis could have repercussions for Manchester United and Chelsea’s pursuit of Erling Haaland, according to reports. The Gunners landed Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid in the January transfer window and the 22-year-old has been a huge success at the Emirates thus far.

Previously the most wanted teenage wonderkid in world football, Odegaard has supplied two goals in 12 appearances but more than his direct goal contributions has produced several influential performances and added extra creativity to the team’s attack.

The Norway international impressed in the 3-3 draw with West Ham on Sunday as Arsenal came from three goals down to rescue a point away to the Hammers.

And Arsenal would love to sign the playmaker on a permanent basis in the summer, with Odegaard’s chances of becoming a vital player under Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu seemingly slim with the Frenchman giving him few opportunities.

But it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be able to meet Los Blancos’ demands for the player if they were to actually chase up a permanent deal.

Transfermarkt say Odegaard’s value stands at £36million and that may be about as much as Arsenal could muster to sign the player, who also impressed out on loan at Real Sociedad last term.

That is because Odegaard is also thought to earn wages of around £85,000 a week and so that would represent an added commitment of £4m per year for each year of any contract he were to sign.

Odegaard has a release clause of more than £300m in his contract and Real Madrid could take a hardline stance to extract as much money as possible if he expresses a wish to leave for Arsenal.

The north Londoners had to make 55 members of staff redundant last summer to fund signings and were able to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid for £45m as well as Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille for £22m.

But they are expected to be restricted financially once again in the coming market, although it is hoped fans will return to Premier League stadiums on a weekly basis next season.

The Independent say that Real Madrid are also suffering a financial squeeze and that the sale of Odegaard could help facilitate their own summer plans.

The reigning La Liga champions have their sights set on signing Haaland, who Man United and Chelsea are also eager to sign after 49 goals in 49 games for Borussia Dortmund.

The report adds that president Florentino Perez intends to funnel all the money he has available into a deal to sign Haaland and Odegaard’s international team-mate is said to be keen on a move to the Spanish capital.

And the sale of Odegaard to Arsenal would help free up extra funds which could help Real Madrid to beat the Gunners’ rivals United and Chelsea to the signing of Haaland.

While playing along countryman and Norway captain Odegaard in Madrid might appeal to the striker, the exciting attacking midfielder is not fancied by Zidane at present.

However the prospect of him joining Arsenal on a full-time basis is likely to rely solely on whether or not Mikel Arteta and Edu and co. can muster the finances to pay however much the La Liga heavyweights want.

Arteta has suggested he would love to get such a deal done after hailing the on-loan attacker in the aftermath of the draw with West Ham.

“I think he had an incredible performance, he was very intelligent the way he read the game, the way he effected the game and again he showed how much he wants to win,” the Spaniard said.

“When everyone was a little bit trembling, he gave us that composure on the ball and he created chance after chance.

“I love talented and creative players that all the time are willing to take that ball and make things happen, that are mobile and also hard-working. He is one of them.

“We have some others with different qualities but it’s true that Martin is now giving us a different level on certain things that we didn’t have.

“He’s been showing that from week one. When he steps on to that pitch, he always wants the ball.

“He commands the pressing and he’s been really influential. I think we are all happily surprised because he looks shy and humble but when he steps on that pitch, he is a real character. He loves to play football.”

While Arsenal legend Ian Wright said of Odegaard: “He is someone they do need to make sure they make that signing if they can. He did really come to the fore today.”

Arsenal are expected to hold talks with Real Madrid at the end of the season to discuss Odegaard’s future, having also had Dani Ceballos on loan from the same club this year and last year.
