Arsenal ‘favourites’ to sign Jordan Henderson amid Liverpool contract worries

Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Jordan Henderson as the Liverpool captain faces uncertainty over his future at Anfield.

Henderson, 31, joined the Reds from Sunderland in 2011 and has silenced the doubters to become one of the club's most important players under Jurgen Klopp.

After replacing iconic midfielder Steven Gerrard as captain, Henderson positioned himself as one of Klopp's key lieutenants, leading the side to victory in the Champions League and their first ever Premier League title.

It seems inconceivable that the Reds would consider letting the England star depart, but that is what is on the cards as Henderson approaches the final two years of his current contract.

Reports at the weekend suggested there is an impasse in negotiations between Henderson and Liverpool over a new deal, leading some to speculate that he could leave the club.

The Athletic claim that extension talks are ongoing but add that Liverpool's owners, FGS, currently have more important priorities.

His situation is not dissimilar to that of Georginio Wijnaldum, who joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer earlier this summer after he failed to agree fresh terms at Anfield.

Liverpool fans now fear that Henderson could make a similar move, although the odds suggest he will swap Merseyside for London rather than Paris.

That is because Arsenal have been installed as the surprise favourite to sign the midfielder with bookmaker Coral.

Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: "Jordan Henderson is now into the last two years of his current contract at Liverpool.

"And if and when he does move on, Arsenal are our favourites to sign the midfielder."

However, the Gunners would face significant competition if Henderson does come on the market.

Atletico Madrid, Leicester and PSG are among the other frontrunners for his signature, while Manchester City and Juventus are also in the running.
