Arsenal forced to pay £8m to Mesut Ozil as outcast triggers bonus amid transfer reports

Arsenal have had to pay £8m to Mesut Ozil after he triggered a loyalty bonus in his contract at the Emirates. By staying at the club through the transfer window the German was owed the money at the end of September.

Ozil is not being used by Mikel Arteta and his days at Arsenal seem to be numbered.

That was underlined by the Gunners leaving the midfielder out of their Europa League squad last week.

Arsenal have been keen to move Ozil on and get rid of his astronomical wages off the books but have little success so far.

The World Cup winner is determined to stay until the end of his contract though which expires next summer.

To make matters even worse for Arsenal they have had to shell out £8m to Ozil due to a loyalty bonus he had previously negotiated, according to The Athletic.

Arsenal are saving significant amounts of money bu not playing the midfielder though.

That’s because the 31-year-old has a raft of appearance bonuses included in his contract as well.

All eyes will be on October 20 now when Premier League clubs have to register their squads for the remainder of the season.

It is possible Ozil could leave the club before then with a number of transfer windows still open across the world.

Arsenal have reportedly received an offer of £5million for Mesut Ozil, from Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

According to TyC Sports, the Gunners board have now received an offer from Al-Nassr.

The player has been offered a lucrative two-year contract in the Middle East but he is determined to see out the rest of his deal at Arsenal.

Journalist Duncan Castles recently confirmed the interest from Saudi Arabia but also reaffirmed that the 31-year-old has no desire to make the move.

He said on the Transfer Window Podcast: “I understand that Saudi Arabia’s interest in Premier League players doesn’t end with Juan Mata.

“There has also been a proposal to Mesut Ozil which would go down very well with the hierarchy at Arsenal if they managed to get Ozil off their books.

“They have left him out of their Europa League squad and have been trying to get him to accept a settlement on his contract for some time now unsuccessfully.

“They watched him do a very intelligent and quite amusing public relations move in going on social media to back your favourite Gunnersaurus and guarantee that he would cover Gunnersaurus’ wages for as long as he remained at the club.

“I believe Ozil has turned that move down partly because of his relationships and history with Turkey, who do not have the best of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia at present.”
