Arsenal are looking to get one over their north London rivals in a bid to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna, according to reports. The Japan international had previously been linked with a move to Tottenham.
It was reported earlier in the summer that Spurs were on the verge of signing Tomiyasu from Bologna in a £15million deal.
His versatility across the backline was seen as a huge plus point for Spurs with Nuno Espirito Santo keen to strengthen his options.
Last season he mainly played as a right-back but was also often used more centrally as part of a back three.
And with Tottenham eager to bring in a right-back with Serge Aurier set to leave, Tomiyasu was seen as the ideal target.
Talks over a deal went cold in recent weeks though and Arsenal have now swooped in for discussions on deadline day.
According to The Athletic, talks are already taking place between Arsenal and Bologna.
However, the report adds that any agreement will depend on ‘other player movements at the club’.
Arsenal are desperate to strengthen at right back and had originally targeted a move for Barcelona’s Emerson Royal.
But Tottenham have moved forward with a deal for the Brazilian full-back and a deal is expected to be confirmed before the deadline.
It now seems as though the Gunners are planning to steal Tomiyasu from the clutches of Tottenham in the final few hours of the transfer window.
Mikel Arteta is said to be a huge fan of the Japanese defender and is personally pushing for the deal to happen.
Signing a right-back will be key before the deadline passes with Hector Bellerin set to leave.
The Spaniard has fallen out of favour in recent years and wants a return to Spain.
Barcelona had been interested in re-signing the full-back in previous years, but that interest has waned.
However, Bellerin has been offered a return to his home nation with Real Betis swooping in for the defender.
