Football Digest: Arsenal tipped for defensive moves in transfer window
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is in line to receive his second transfer windfall in a matter of days. Sell-on clauses for Konstantinos Mavropanos and Matteu Guendouzi are set to pay dividends this summer, potentially boosting the Gunners’ transfer kitty for future endeavours.
Mavropanos’ move to Stuttgart last year came with a clause that would guarantee Arsenal 10-per-cent of a future transfer fee. The Greek international had only made eight senior appearances for the Gunners at the time of the move.
But Edu’s foresight only took one season to pay off, as Mavropanos completed his £20million switch to West Ham this week. Although the £2m portion heading to the Emirates Stadium is hardly earth-shattering, it’s currently a case of ‘every little helps’ for Arsenal in a window that has seen them struggle to move players on.
Granit Xhaka to Bayer Leverkusen remains the most lucrative sale, while there remains the possibility of Folarin Balogun and Nuno Tavares fetching larger fees before next month’s deadline.

In the meantime, Arsenal look destined to pocket another £3m via Guendouzi’s move to Lazio. The Frenchman joined Marseille only last summer, although the Serie A side have reportedly ramped up discussions to sign him in a £19m deal.
Once again, the Gunners are preparing to come up smelling of roses, having reportedly inserted a 15-per-cent sell-on clause when dealing with Marseille in July last year.

Guendouzi, 24, was phased into the Gunners’ starting XI as a teenager following a free transfer from Lorient. But a falling-out with Arteta in 2020, stemming from an altercation with former Brighton striker Neal Maupay, saw him ostracised from the squad.
“It’s true that I didn’t have the best relationship with him,” Guendouzi explained shortly after leaving north London. “Beyond that, I always tried to work, always gave the maximum of myself in training and in matches.
“I still played a few matches with him, I still did great performances. He preferred to select other players and I respect that decision.
“That’s why, afterwards, I also decided to leave because I was still young, I needed playing time to continue to progress. The most important thing when you’re young is to play.”
