Arsenal supporters could be in for a miserable transfer deadline day.
Despite links to Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey and Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar the Gunners could end the day with no further incoming deals.
Technical director Edu oversaw a fine start to the summer with agreements for Willian, Gabriel and a loan extension for Dani Ceballos, but the window looks set to end on a slightly negative note.
While Aouar told French media that he wanted to stay in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season, Partey’s buy-out clause of £45m looks to have proved too expensive for their limited budget.
The Mirror have reported that Arsenal are ready to ‘admit defeat’ in their pursuit of the Ghana international as they look to organise outgoing deals for Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Sead Kolasinac.
Arteta seemed confident about their chances in the transfer market earlier this week.
He said: "Well, I am very confident in what we are trying to do internally.
"[I am getting] clarity and support from everybody at the club to try and improve the team if we can.
"But most importantly as well, to get the right balance in the squad, for now and the way we want to evolve the squad in the future."
Before adding after the win over Sheffield United: “What I can guarantee is that we are doing our maximum for that to happen. Whether we’re going to achieve it or not, I don’t know.
“Believe me, believe me, the ownership, the board, Edu and myself are doing everything we can to maximise the resources we have to improve the team and sustain and keep the players that are in this club to make this club successful.”

Aouar said of his own plans at Lyon on Sunday: “I felt that I can still bring something to this team.
“I wanted to continue the adventure with the club who raised me.
“We must raise our heads because we have to do better.”
