Arsenal team news as Mikel Arteta puts faith in new signings against Forest

Arteta pleased with depth added to Arsenal squad in transfer window

Arsenal will be desperate to get their Premier League campaign off to a flyer by taking all three points against Nottingham Forest this lunchtime. The Gunners have spent heavily to improve their squad over the summer and will be hoping to challenge Manchester City for the end-of-season honours once again.

Express Sport take a look at how Arsenal could line up on the opening weekend against Forest…

Goalkeeper – Ramsdale

Arsenal’s pursuit of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is finally nearing a conclusion, with the Spaniard reportedly set to finalise his impending move over the coming days. However, it seems clear that Aaron Ramsdale will be given the nod against Forest and at least a few games more while Raya gets settled.

Both players will be hoping to assert themselves as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice option in due course, but only time will tell whether Raya will be able to dislodge the under-pressure Ramsdale between the sticks.

Defence – White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber

It would not be a surprise to see Arsenal go with the same back four that started in last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City. New signing Jurrien Timber is likely to start on the left once again, with Oleksandr Zinchenko having only just returned from a lengthy injury absence.

Meanwhile, the established trio of Ben White, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes will be tasked with keeping things tight alongside Timber in defence.

Midfield – Partey, Rice, Odegaard

A few questions have been asked over Thomas Partey’s continued role at Arsenal following the recent arrival of Declan Rice for a club-record transfer fee. The Ghanaian enforcer did well against City, though, and Arteta seems happy to field both players in the engine room as things stand.

Martin Odegaard will once again shoulder the majority of Arsenal’s creative burden against Forest after excelling on so many occasions throughout the previous campaign.

Attack – Saka, Trossard, Havertz

Bukayo Saka will be expected to play a starring role for the Gunners in their bid to leapfrog City at the top of the Premier League this season. He is Arsenal’s best player and will undoubtedly start on the wing against Forest, while Leandro Trossard could occupy the other flank in place of Gabriel Martinelli, who was somewhat off the pace last weekend.

Kai Havertz was used as a central striker against City in the absence of Gabriel Jesus and will likely reprise that role for today’s visit of the Reds.

Possible Arsenal XI (4-3-3) – Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Partey, Rice, Odegaard; Saka, Trossard, Havertz.
