Arsenal tell Atletico Madrid they will pay Thomas Partey's £45m release clause

Arsenal are making one final attempt to sign Thomas Partey before the transfer window closes and have informed Atletico Madrid they will pay his release clause, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta made signing midfield reinforcements his top priority at the start of the summer, targeting both Atleti destroyer Partey and Lyon’s more creative playmaker Houssem Aouar.

But Atletico were absolutely adamant that the Ghanaian would only leave if his release clause was triggered, while Arsenal could not raise sufficient funds in time to sign Aouar.

Now, according to Spanish radio station COPE, Arsenal have revived their attempt to sign Partey and are preparing a last-gasp attempt to trigger his buyout clause.

The two clubs have already been in talks for several days over Lucas Torreira, who has undergone a medical in Madrid and will join the Spanish side on a season-long loan, though talks over Partey also appear to have been happening simultaneously.

But Atleti still have not budged on their stance that the 27-year-old can only leave if Arsenal pay his €50million (£45m) release clause in full.

Most transfers see the fee spread out over several years with only a small up-front fee, but Arsenal will need to stump up the total cash sum for Partey to secure his signature.

Incredibly, despite their well-publicised financial difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic, the north London club are preparing to do exactly that and COPE say they will deposit the £45m fee with the La Liga offices imminently.

No further negotiations with Atletico will be required and, according to, lawyers at Arsenal’s London Colney training bases are furiously working on the deal right now.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with the midfielder keen to move to the Emirates and having already tasked his representatives with verbally agreeing terms over the summer.

A deal for Partey would represent a massive coup for Arsenal and provide Arteta with the defensive midfielder he has craved, though the club have precious little time to trigger the release clause with Partey set to have a medical in Madrid in order to complete the deal before the deadline.
