Arsenal transfer round-up: Aouar ‘agrees to join’ Gunners but fee not yet agreed

As Mikel Arteta continues to retool his Arsenal squad, attempting to build a team that is capable of challenging for a top-four finish, swirling rumours persist, continuing to link the Gunners with a whole host of names.

The most prominent of the Gunners’ potential targets at present is Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, and we have a major update on the midfielder here. Other names linked with moves to the Emirates include Thomas Partey and even Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

Meanwhile, Arteta will take his side to Anfield to face Liverpool on Monday evening, looking to maintain his team’s 100% start to the new season. Liverpool and Arsenal started the weekend in fourth and third position respectively, and the Reds are the ideal measuring stick for a prospective rebuild.

Slowly but surely, Jurgen Klopp assembled a title-winning team. That is the project that now faces Arteta, who is just at the start of that process.

Here is a round-up of the latest Arsenal transfer rumours.

Aouar 'agrees to join Arsenal'

The man of the moment for Arsenal this week is Aouar. While Partey was reportedly viewed as the number one target earlier in the summer, it now seems as though Aouar is Arsenal’s priority, with Arteta especially keen to add some creativity to his midfield.

And, according to Telefoot via Sports Mole, Aouar will reciprocate Arsenal’s interest. The report states that Aouar has given up hope of joining Juventus or Barcelona, who have withdrawn any interest they may have had, and has now set his sights on moving to Arsenal.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, there is no doubt that Aouar is Arsenal’s preference and that personal terms will not be an issue. He reported that the club would offer a five-year deal, tying down Aouar to 2025, which the Frenchman is keen to accept.

The only thing preventing this deal, then, is an agreement between the two clubs, which is seemingly proving difficult.

Per wide-ranging reports, Arsenal made an offer for Aouar on Friday evening. However, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, who certainly seems to confirm such an offer, their valuation is “too far” from his.

Writing on Twitter on Saturday, Aulas said: “For Houssem, Arsenal is too far from his value: we are counting on him to play a great match in Lorient and lead OL in CL next year."

The initial offer is said to be around £32million, but Lyon value Aouar at £55million. It is understood that Arteta is a huge admirer of Aouar and is driving a potential deal forwards as he seeks a more creative option in central midfield.

It seems as though the two clubs will have to continue negotiations as they look to come to an agreement.

Jorginho an alternative option

With any move for Partey reportedly depending on Arsenal’s ability to activate his £45million release clause, even with Atletico Madrid’s interest in Lucas Torreira, the Gunners may be forced to turn to alternative options in the defensive midfield position.

And Sky Sports reports that Jorginho could be a possible target. The Italian international, who has captained Chelsea in the last two fixtures, could be deemed surplus to requirements under Frank Lampard should Declan Rice arrive from West Ham United.

Lampard has spent lavishly, bringing in a whole host of attacking players, such as Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. With N’Golo Kante likely dropping deeper as a result, Jorginho could become available.

Arteta was an assistant coach at Manchester City when Pep Guardiola chased Jorginho, before the Italian international signed for Chelsea.
