Arsenal Women's players 'furious' after team-mates' Dubai trip

Arsenal Women’s players ‘furious’ after three team-mates travelled to Dubai during Christmas break – with one since testing positive for coronavirus – as club push for their next game to be postponed as several stars isolate

  • The players in question travelled to Dubai after London was placed in Tier 4
  • Katie McCabe was among the trio to travel but was not the player to test positive
  • Arsenal have reminded players of their responsibilities following the incident
  • Several stars are now self-isolating due to close contact with the positive player

Several Arsenal Women’s stars have been left angry after three of their team-mates travelled to Dubai during the Christmas break, with one since testing positive, according to reports.

The players in question made the trip to the UAE after London had gone into Tier 4 the week before Christmas Day, having played in the 4-0 victory against Everton on December 20, the club’s final game before the festive period.

But now The Daily Telegraph claim the decision taken by the three players – which includes the Republic of Ireland’s Katie McCabe – has left many of their team-mates furious and club officials disappointed by their actions.

The report adds that with the club having concluded their trips were made for ‘business reasons’ following an internal investigation, no further action has been deemed necessary but the players have been reminded of their responsibilities.

However, the more immediate threat comes with the club reportedly requesting Saturday’s match against Aston Villa be postponed with several club stars now having to self-isolate having come into close contact with the player who has tested positive.

McCabe posted images from a Dubai beach on Instagram during the break but the report claims she is not the player who has tested positive for Covid-19.

The news comes after four Manchester City Women players tested positive for the virus having also – crucially with the club’s permission – travelled to Dubai.

The quartet as yet remain unnamed, but the club were made aware of their intentions to travel before the break.

And while the Arsenal players’ journey was made after the Government introduced a ban on any travel from Tier 4 areas in London and the South East, except for business, their City counterparts did so while Manchester was under Tier 3 restrictions, where overseas travelled was permitted although not advised.

Dubai was among the countries that had established a permitted travel corridor with the UK during that period.

Arsenal sit second in the Women’s Super League ahead of the restart, two positions and four points above City, who have played a game less.
