Arsenal’s £61m defence in youth team astounds fans who send Stan Kroenke message

Arsenal fans have been left astounded as their youth side fielded £61m worth of defensive players – and took the time to send a message to owner Stan Kroenke.

The Gunners spent nearly £60m on three new players over the summer, with Willian arriving on a free transfer while Thomas Partey was secured on transfer deadline day.

Another player to be thrown into the starting XI is Gabriel Magalhaes, who arrived from Lille for £22m as a centre-back.

But Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring in the Brazilian has meant some big-name signings missing out on places in the side.

Teenager William Saliba, who secured a deal last summer for £27m before being sent back on loan to Saint-Etienne, is yet to make a senior appearance in north London this year.

While Sokratis Papastathopoulos, one of Unai Emery’s first signings in 2018 for £15m, and Calum Chambers – a £16m arrival from Southampton in 2014 – have also fallen out of favour.

But this has seen all three get starting places in Arsenal’s U23 side for a Premier League 2 clash against Everton.

And the Gunners faithful were shocked to see more than £60m of talent being used in the second team.

“Squad depth, I guess – if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry,” one supporter said.

Another commented: “Who said we don’t spent.”

While a third sent a message to Kroenke, with: “Fans need to know that the Kroenkes are doing more than enough, for the club to line up a back four for U23s at £61m.

And a fourth added: “Arsenal is self sustainable.”

With a fifth simply writing: “And our fans the Kroenkes don’t invest.”

Another player who has not been getting first-team action is Mesut Ozil, who was not selected by Arteta for the Premier League or Europa League sides this season.

But the Gunners boss has admitted he feels “hurt and sad” over the German midfielder’s axing as he opens up on the decision.

It comes as that Daily Star have taken a look at how the north London side’s 17 stars out on loan are performing so far this season.
