Arsenal’s summer signings ranked – and three transfers Arteta must make next

Arsenal’s signings have been hardly been the big successes that fans had hoped for in the summer, but it has not been all bad.

And no doubt Mikel Arteta will have his plans for the summer over who he wants to bring in.

The Gunners will want to forget this season after a disastrous campaign that has seen Unai Emery lose his job.

Freddie Ljungberg came in for an interim period of time but fortunes hardly changed and Arteta has urged the side to show some fight.

Arsenal signed five players in the summer, including the likes of Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney.

But how have they got on this season?

Nicolas Pepe

The Ivory Coast international joined for a club-record fee of £72m from Lille but has struggled to cope with the speeds of the Premier League.

There are certainly signs that the 24-year-old can be a huge star but as of yet, he has not shown it with four goals in 24 league appearances.

Verdict: Miss

Kieran Tierney

Tierney arrived at the Emirates already carrying an injury and that has been the story of his season.

Making just five appearances in the Premier League, the ex- Celtic star has had a torrid time and will need another year before a proper verdict can be made.

Verdict: N/A

David Luiz

After the departure of Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal needed an experienced leader with a cool head.

Instead they got… Luiz. The ex- Chelsea man has been brilliant with his passing at times but more often than not he has been a liability at the back.

Verdict: Miss

Gabriel Martinelli

Not much was expected from the 18-year-old after moving from Brazil in the summer and has been an absolute revelation.

In all competitions, he has netted 10 times – making him the second-top goalscorer at Arsenal behind Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang.

Verdict: Hit

Dani Ceballos

Big things have been expected from the Spaniard since his move to Real Madrid but it has not quite worked out for him, there or here in the Premier League.

There were rumours that the ex-Real Betis star could leave in January after limited game-time but Arteta has tried to include him more.

Verdict: Miss

Who could Arteta sign?

It is clear to see that a centre-back is the top priority in the transfer window and he should look no further than RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

Aubameyang’s future remains up in the air and Arsenal need a reliable No. 9 and that man could be Torino star Andrea Belotti.

While a winger to partner Pepe on the other flank would be ideal and Wilfried Zaha deserves a move to a top club after years of service to Crystal Palace.
