Diego Simeone raged against refereeing injustice and admitted there will be some hard thinking to do at the end of what will now be a trophyless season at Atletico Madrid.

Asked about the fact that Atletico are now only playing for a top four place having been knocked out of Europe and the domestic cup competition, Simeone said: ‘The only thing to do is to keep working hard. When we get to the end of the season we will analyse everything.’

There were shades of his comments after the 2016 Champions League final when after another defeat to Real Madrid he said he was thinking about considering his future.

‘We are out of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey but the only way I know how to work is to keep working and that’s what I will do for as long as I am Atletico Madrid coach,’ he said.

Simeone’s team were left fuming after they were reduced to 10 men in extra time just before Real Madrid got the winner in their epic 3-1 comeback.

Stefan Savic had been booked moments before for tangling off the ball with Vinicius who was also cautioned. He then brought down Eduardo Camavinga and was shown the second yellow.

‘If it’s red for Savic it should be red for them,’ said Jan Oblak in reference to an incident earlier in the game when Dani Ceballos was booked but then escaped a second caution with a clumsy challenge on the edge of the area moments later.

‘We are used to it but it’s hard to take,’ said Jan Oblak.

Simeone said: ‘What happened with Ceballos was crucial in the result. It seems that no one cares but it is the reality. But we competed well. I don’t know if the referee has a personal problem with Morata because he didn’t give him a single foul all night.’

Several Atletico players went to speak to the referee Cesar Soto Grado during half time of extra time. Koke who had already been taken off and Jose Gimenez, who was an used substitute, both sought out the match official.

‘The referee was brilliant,’ responded Ceballos. ‘Savic brings down Camavinga and has to be shown the yellow.’

Carlo Ancelotti said: ‘It’s normal that Atletico are upset about losing after the way they played.’

Karim Benzema added: ‘Rodrygo’s goal was brilliant. We know he is capable of that.’
