Atletico Madrid 'enter the race to sign Juventus star Adrien Rabiot'

Atletico Madrid ‘enter the race to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot on a free transfer’, with the Spanish giants ‘hoping international team-mate Antoine Griezmann can convince him to join’

  • Adrien Rabiot’s financial demands could prove too high for Atletico Madrid
  • Reports suggest Rabiot’s renewal would depend on Massimiliano Allegri staying
  • Manchester United are ‘handed a blow in their pursuit of Juventus star Rabiot’

Atletico Madrid are keen on bringing French midfielder Adrien Rabiot to the club on a free transfer, according to reports.

Rabiot’s contract is set to expire at Juventus, and although the Bianconeri are thought to be keen on extending his stay in Turin, the 28-year-old has admirers across Europe.

In addition to that, the fact that he arrived at the Old Lady on a free from Paris Saint-Germain means that his financial demands will already be quite high, which could price a number of clubs out of a deal.

As such, Atletico are likely to only find competition for his services in the financial superpower that is the Premier League, with Manchester United also interested in taking the Frenchman on a free.

Given that United are far more likely to be able to afford more lucrative wages, Atleti are hoping that international team-mate Antoine Griezmann can help convince him to join, according to El Chiringuito.

The report claims that the Madrid-based club are hopeful that their No 8 will intervene and help to guide Rabiot in the right direction.

Although a competitive financial offer will have to be presented to remain a viable option this summer, Atleti are optimistic that the glowing recommendation of a team-mate can tip the scales in their favour.

Rabiot has pulled out of contention on the pitch for France’s upcoming international clashes with a calf injury, but the pair are set to reunite at Clairefontaine as he continues his recovery.

As reported by Calciomercato, Juventus met with Rabiot’s mother as they look to persuade him to stay.

United attempted to sign Rabiot last summer, with Juventus accepting a £19million bid.

However, the move failed to materialise, with Rabiot’s wage demands of £250,000-a-week proving an issue.

Rabiot, who has been at Juventus since 2019, made 48 appearances in all competitions last season, with all but one coming from the start, and scored eight goals, providing four assists as well.

The Old Lady are, however, unable to offer Champions League football, which could form a crucial stumbling block in any attempts to sign him on to a one-year deal.

Reports suggest that Rabiot’s renewal at Juventus is contingent on Massimiliano Allegri staying on as manager

That is not to say that a renewal is entirely off the table, however, it is likely that for him to stay then boss Massimiliano Allegri will also have to be kept on in charge of the side.

Allegri has shown faith in the player, who has rewarded him on the pitch, and the manager’s continued presence could prove vital given how well he has played under the Italian.

Atletico reportedly believe, however, that they have their prize in reach, and believe that he could prove crucial in taking their midfield to the next level.

The club already boasts the likes of Koke, Marcos Llorente and World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul, with Rabiot adding further quality at an elite level in the middle of the park.
