Barcelona have confirmed that Martin Braithwaite has undergone a successful knee operation after getting injured last month, but remain tight-lipped on his recovery.

Braithwaite had been in fine form for Barca at the start of the new LaLiga season, playing in all three games so far. He scored twice and got an assist in a 4-2 win over Real Sociedad.

However, the Denmark striker sustained a serious knee injury in Barca’s 2-1 win against Getafe on August 29 and had to miss his country’s World Cup qualifiers earlier this month.

While initially hoping to treat the injury more lightly, the decision was made for Braithwaite to have surgery, with initial estimates that he faced a three or four-month lay-off.

Barca have now said they will make another assessment of Braithwaite following his operation before determining how long he will face on the sidelines.

The news is yet another injury blow for Ronald Koeman’s side in the attack department, made all the more stark after Barcelona’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Braithwaite is the latest forward to join Ronald Koeman’s lengthy injury list at Barcelona

Koeman’s injury list now includes, along with Braithwaite, Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati and Sergio Aguero, who joined Barca from Manchester City in the summer and is yet to play a minute of football.

The Argentine is not set to return until mid-October while Fati is still waiting to make his comeback after undergoing knee surgery last season.

Memphis Depay partnered with last-minute loan signing Luuk de Jong against Bayern, with Koeman’s threadbare quad taking yet another hit after teenage star Pedri picked up an injury in the match.

Koeman was transparent about his team’s injury crisis and pointed to it directly in defending Barca’s woeful performance against Bayern.

‘I only had three forwards to pick from,’ said the Dutch coach who finished with four teenagers on the pitch.

‘Of course we would have liked to compete better but there is a difference in their quality as a team (and ours). There was a big difference between the benches too. We have lots of players with a big future but right now we need players back from injury.’
