Barcelona agree Atletico deal giving them first option on stars Saul and Gimenez

Barcelona have agreed a £12.75m deal with Atletico Madrid which gives them first refusal on five players at the Wanda Metropolitano.

First-team stars Saul Niguez and Jose Gimenez are included in the agreement, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

Additionally, unnamed members of Atletico’s Under-18s and Under-20s teams make up the rest.

The understanding is that Atletico would be obliged to give La Liga rivals and reigning champions Barcelona the possibility of matching any offer from another club for one of the specific players.

Diego Simeone’s side would have to first be willing to sell the individual in the first place.

If he wishes to quit the club and there is another team interested in signing him, Barcelona would then be informed.

The £12.75m deal means Atletico must let the Catalan giants know what the offer is.

Barcelona then have the preferential option to match the bid or make an improved proposal.

Mundo Deportivo add the controversial £107m sale of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico to Barcelona is not linked to the new agreement.

Atletico accused Barcelona of tapping Griezmann up before he finally secured his long-awaited switch to the Nou Camp this summer.

He could ultimately be joined by some of his former team-mates in the future.

Saul and Gimenez, both 24 years of age, have established themselves as integral members of Simeone’s set-up.

And the future of centre-midfielder Saul in particular is very much secure in Madrid.

He penned a unique nine-year contract in 2017, which means he is tied down with Atletico until 2026.

Uruguay international centre-half Gimenez, meanwhile, signed a new five-year deal in June 2018, meaning he is contracted at the club up to 2023.

Barcelona have simply prepared for the possibility that either player becomes available in the future.
