Barcelona have reportedly got a back-up plan should they fail in their attempts to bring Lyon forward Memphis Depay to the club.

Depay was heavily linked with a move to the Nou Camp this summer but a switch failed to materialise due to ‘LaLiga rules’.

Barca boss Ronald Koeman is still keen to get his man when the transfer window reopens in January but the Catalan giants could turn to PSV Eindhoven’s Donyell Malen if they are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Depay, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The 21-year-old Dutchman has four years left on his contract in Holland but has impressed this season, notching five goals and providing two assists in nine games.

Like Depay, Malen is a player Koeman knows from his days as Holland boss with the 57-year-old handing the attacker his senior international debut last year.

Barcelona were financially limited to what they could in the recent transfer market due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Catalan giants made a £88million loss this year, which ultimately led to them missing out on a number of key targets.

Barcelona also stated LaLiga and the Champions League being played beyond June 30, which was the end date of the financial year, also had an impact on the club’s profits and expenses, leaving them without the resources to pursue major deals in the transfer window.

Barca are set to reignite their interest in Depay in January and could get the Dutchman on a cut-price deal as he is in the final year of his deal in France.

‘Everything was ready, but because of the LaLiga rules we knew we had to sell first before we could sign our targets,’ Koeman said of Depay earlier this month to Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad.

‘In the end it was not possible. It was disappointing, but Memphis knew how the situation was at Barca.’

Barcelona are in a period of transition with Koeman appointed in August while Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu and the rest of the club’s board resigned on Tuesday night. Barca face Juventus in the Champions League group stages on Wednesday night following defeat in El Clasico on Saturday.
