Bayern Munich confirm appointment of Chelsea coach Anthony Barry as he is reunited with former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel after £1m compensation fee was agreed

  • Thomas Tuchel has wanted Anthony Barry to join him at Bayern for weeks
  • Barry also wanted to go to Bayern, but a compensation fee couldn’t be agreed
  • Chelsea and Bayern have now finally come to an agreement over compensation

Chelsea and Bayern Munich have finally reached an agreement for the Blues’ first team coach Anthony Barry to move to the German giants.

Bayern appointed Thomas Tuchel as their new manager last month, and the former Chelsea boss revealed at his opening press conference that he wanted Barry alongside him in the dugout after they worked together at Stamford Bridge.

Barry had informed Chelsea of his desire to be reunited with Tuchel, but the two clubs could not initially reach an agreement, and the English coach was asked to stay away from the training ground while discussions continued.

Bayern have now confirmed Barry’s appointment as assistant coach following weeks of discussions. He link up with the former Blues boss, with the German giants paying a £1million compensation fee for his services.

Chelsea and Bayern were both on the same side of the Champions League draw and it is understood that a potential semi-final meeting may have played a part in Barry’s delayed departure from the west London club.

However, Frank Lampard’s side were knocked out by Real Madrid on Tuesday, with Bayern exiting at the hands of Manchester City the following day,

Barry is now set to head to Munich and his departure is a blow for Chelsea given how highly-rated he is by the club.

He arrived as an assistant coach in 2020 and worked under Lampard, Tuchel and Graham Potter, with his work on set-pieces catching the eye of his peers.

Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea in September, but will now work with Barry once more less than a year later.

Barry will leave Chelsea following a dismal campaign for the club that has seen them drop into the bottom half of the table.

American owner Todd Boehly has sacked two managers this term, and is now looking for the club’s next permanent manager, with Lampard in caretaker charge until the end of the season.

The team look almost certain to miss out on European football next season, with their faint hopes extinguished after their Champions League elimination.

Bayern still have plenty to play for, though, as they battle Borussia Dortmund for the Bundesliga title.

They currently have a two-point advantage over Dortmund with six games left to play.
