Ben Foster receives Hollywood memorabilia as a gift from Ryan Reynolds

Ben Foster has revealed he received a piece of Deadpool memorabilia from Ryan Reynolds in exchange for his match-worn shirt after Wrexham gained promotion to the Football League. The former England and Manchester United goalkeeper agreed to come out of retirement last month after Wrexham’s first-choice shot-stopper Rob Lainton suffered a knee ligament injury.

Foster hasn’t looked back since signing for the Red Dragons, with the 40-year-old playing a pivotal role in helping the north Wales outfit win the National League title. After Wrexham beat Boreham Wood 3-1 last Saturday (April 22), Foster led the celebrations as chants of “Wrexham” drowned out the Racecourse Ground under a flare-lit sky.

And Foster was soon approached by Reynolds, who co-owns the Welsh club with fellow actor Rob McElhenney, who demanded his shirt after gaining promotion. Little did Foster know, though, that Reynolds would have something very special for him in return.

On his Fozcast podcast, Foster recalled: “Ryan Reynolds, he text me the morning of the game to say, ‘Can I have your shirt?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, cool.’ He was like, ‘Cool, because I’ve got something for you as well.’ I was like, ‘OK? What on earth’s this?’

“So, anyway, he text me yesterday and said, ‘I forgot to tell you what it is. I was going through my memorabilia the other day of Deadpool, and I found the original gloves that I wore in the film.’ The Deadpool gloves, his whole outfit’s pretty famous, really, isn’t it?”

Foster also revealed how Reynolds gave only one of the gloves because the other was gifted to Jay Fear, a Wrexham fan who has terminal cancer. The goalkeeper reiterated how the classy gesture is yet another example of how much the club means to the Canadian-American actor.

He concluded: “And he said, ‘I gave one of the gloves to a guy with terminal cancer the other day, but the other one I wanna give to you because I see you give your gloves away all the time and you never get given back in return.’ And I was like, ‘Mate, I am buzzing so much for this.’ This is going in a frame in the Foster household, like you wouldn’t believe!”

And Reynolds didn’t stop his generosity there. In an exchange on Instagram Reynolds joked: “I’m also gifting you the Deadpool underwear. Which, to be fair, smells better than the shirt you gave me.”

Foster was previously linked with moves to Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season before signing a short-term deal with Wrexham. He was initially planning on retiring for good after his stint in Wales – but he may just change his mind.

He recently admitted: “You have to contemplate it [carrying on] because to be part of this team, to be part of Wrexham is a special thing. It really is. It’s nice to be a man of leisure and freedom and stuff like that and I’ve really enjoyed my retirement.

“I’ve had a great time. What I will say is that I’ve enjoyed this so much – Wrexham is a really special club. The lads that we’ve got are absolutely top class and it’s a pleasure to come to work with every single one of them, every single day.”
