Callum Wilson has what it takes to be Newcastle’s difference-maker this season – according to legendary former striker Andy Cole.
Cole fired Newcastle to third in the Premier League table as he won the Golden Boot in the 1993/94 Premier League campaign.
He eventually departed for Manchester United the following season before going on to net 187 top flight goals.
Wilson now arrives as Newcastle’s next No.9, taking over the iconic shirt from Joelinton and getting off to a dream start with a goal against West Ham at the weekend.
There are high hopes that the former Bournemouth striker can help Steve Bruce’s side kick-on in the top flight.
And Cole reckons the £20m fee paid for Wilson will more than be repaid as long as he maintains the standards he has shown in recent years.

Cole, speaking to the Daily Star following his involvement in BGC Charity Day 2020, raising millions for charity including Oasis Charitable Trust, said: “Only time will tell. I think at £20m it’s a good acquisition.
“He’s had a few seasons in the Premier League now, I think his best return has been around 15-18 goals.
“For Newcastle, if someone can give them 15 goals that’s a big plus and will be a real boost for them.
“The boy they got in last season, Joelinton, only got two goals and for a team like Newcastle trying to stay in the Premier League and kick-on in the Premier League they’re going to need someone who can get them 15+.”
Cole believes fees paid by clubs around them in the Premier League, such as Aston Villa’s move for Brentford’s Ollie Watkins, show Wilson’s fee was a shrewd bit of business.

He added: “I think with Wilson, £20million, I don’t think that’s anything you can grumble at because you look at Aston Villa and they’ve spent £28million on a kid who has never played in the Premier League (Ollie Watkins), you don’t know what he’s going to give you.
“I think Steve Bruce has been very astute there, he’s got himself a good signing and after his goalscoring start he’ll be hoping he can see more of that moving forwards.”
