Carragher calls out ‘clown’ Ferdinand live on US TV leaving Henry gobsmacked
Jamie Carragher left Thierry Henry gobsmacked after calling former England team-mate Rio Ferdinand a “clown” on US TV following Inter Milan’s 2-0 win over AC Milan on Wednesday. The Liverpool legend hit out at the Manchester United hero’s opinion on one of the big talking points of the Champions League semi-final first leg.
Inter beat rivals Milan to take one step into the final in Istanbul. Simone Inzaghi’s side were 2-0 up inside 11 minutes after goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Inter were then awarded a penalty after referee Jesus Gil adjudged Simon Kjaer to have brought down Lautaro Martinez. But VAR recommended Gil reviewed the decision on the pitchside monitor and he revoked the penalty.
Appearing on CBS Sports, Carragher claimed the right decision was reached. He said: “I think anyone out there who’s watching the replay and seen what VAR do and still believe that is a penalty, they must be a clown.”
Ferdinand was working on the game as an analyst for BT Sport and claimed AC were lucky to have the penalty chalked off, reiterating that stance on Twitter. Carragher’s good friend and former Liverpool colleague Steven Gerrard also felt the hosts were fortunate.

Carragher defended Gerrard and said a former attacking player such as him is entitled to that view. But he insisted ex-defenders should know the correct decision was made.
Carragher said: “[Gerrard’s] an attacking player, isn’t he? He was liable a little bit now and again to go down himself under a little bit of contact, always contact.
“I can understand where he’s coming from. But players in my position, who are defenders, other defenders, English defenders who were commentating on the game.
“I can understand attackers thinking it’s a penalty but Stevie was an attacking player wasn’t he and maybe felt there was a little bit of contact. But as a defender, we’ve got to try and stick together haven’t we.

“I just felt some people were getting a little bit carried away thinking it was a certain penalty.”
Micah Richards then pressed for Carragher to call out the pundits he was talking about. The former Manchester City star said: “Name names!”
And Carragher had no hesitation in naming Ferdinand. He responded: “Rio Ferdinand. I’m happy to call him a clown.”
Arsenal great Henry was left in shock at Carragher’s comment. The Frenchman slowly pulled his notes above his face to cover his expression.
Richards insisted he did not share the same opinion. He replied: “I don’t want a part of this, I don’t want a part of this!”
