Chelsea and Liverpool fans have been left split over a tight offside call that ruled out Timo Werner's goal at Anfield, with some saying VAR is "killing the game" again.

The German thought he had opened the scoring for the Blues after 25 minutes when he beat Fabinho to N'Golo Kante's looping pass, poking past Alisson to slot into the net.

But Stockley Park's VAR team intervened following celebrations and judged that the forward was playing offside.

The measurement for offside was taken from out-stretched arm, seen to be nearer to the goal that last defender Andy Robertson.

Sky Sports commentator and former Reds man Jamie Carragher said: "He's offside because he has his shirt further out than Andy Robertson, that's how close it is."

And fans from both sides quickly took to Twitter to share their views, with some attacking the referees.

"Something needs done about VAR. Shambles," one said.

While another commented: "VAR continues to kill the game and nothing changes."

And a third simply said: "On what planet is Werner offside here???? I'm a Liverpool fan but this offside rule is killing our game!"

A fourth held nothing back, with: "Way onside. Football is being erased before our eyes.:"

With a Chelsea rival supporter saying: "As a Liverpool fan, that was onside."

But others were suggesting that the letter of the law was being fulfilled, with the right decision being reached.

"Well Werner shouldn't be offside then," another viewer said.

With a seventh adding: "I can think of countless offside decisions from past seasons pre VAR that were so far wrong. While the Werner one is marginal, it was right."
