Frank Lampard has confirmed that Christian Pulisic’s hamstring injury is not serious and has even hinted that the winger could return for this coming weekend’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United.
The American skidded over during Saturday’s pre-match warm-up before taking on Burnley, tweaking his hamstring in the process, and was pulled from the starting line-up and replaced by Timo Werner.
Pulisic has missed much of the start of the season with a hamstring injury sustained in the FA Cup final, but Lampard has quelled fears over his latest setback and, while he will not take on Rennes on Wednesday night, he is already back training.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference before the Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge, Lampard said: ‘Christian had a scan yesterday which showed a very, very minor injury to his hamstring, very minor.
‘So he’s already back outside [training]. He won’t be fit for tomorrow but we’ll see after that.’
Asked if Pulisic will need to be managed carefully this season, Lampard continued: ‘It is obviously a relief for the injury to be on the small side.
‘It felt like that to Christian but he made the right decision in not attempting to play the game because that could have made it worse.
‘So it’s clearly a relief that hopefully we’ll have him back very soon, because he’s an important player for us.
‘With the actual muscle injuries, that’s a hard one to call. It’s forever going to be a challenge.
‘Some players that play on the edge, that have such speed in their game and acceleration, maybe they could be more susceptible.
‘That’s just a one-fits-all answer, because it’s different for everybody.
‘From last season we were looking at ways to manage Christian and just trying to be proactive in not hopefully getting so many injuries.
‘I know it’s something he would have experienced previously in his career at Dortmund as well. So we’re all working in the same direction on that one to try and get him to be as fit as regularly as possible. Because we know the talent.’
