Chelsea boss Pochettino faces one big problem with Azpilicueta exit looming

Premier League transfer round-up as Nkunku joins Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino may be forced into the transfer market amid reports that Cesar Azpilicueta could be about to leave Chelsea. The Blues face a huge summer window and their new manager knows it’s one he must get right.

Nicolas Jackson is on the brink of officially completing his move to Chelsea, joining the likes of Christian Nkunku through the doors this summer. These are exciting young names but a problem may be unfolding behind the scenes for former Tottenham boss Pochettino.

It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that club captain and veteran Azpilicueta could exit shortly, with him just waiting for Chelsea to ‘give the green light to a mutual termination of his contract’. He has reportedly agreed personal terms with Inter Milan over a two-year contract.

While he is now rather surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge with Reece James above him in the pecking order at right-back, his exit would leave a huge void. That being that Chelsea have a huge lack of leaders in their current set-up.

Other than Thiago Silva, there is no real captain at Pochettino’s disposal. Yes, they have the likes of Raheem Sterling who has seen it all, but he’s hardly the leader figure needed to help the Blues bounce back from a dismal last campaign.

There’s those like Reece James too that have come through the academy and are Chelsea through and through, but again, there would be so much pressure on his shoulders at such a young age.

Furthermore, Silva isn’t getting any younger and he doesn’t have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge, putting Chelsea chiefs in a rather precarious position when it comes to to finding leader figures.

If Pochettino wants to get Chelsea back to their glory days quickly, then he knows what he and the Blues hierarchy must address next in the transfer market. It’s a very crucial time for the club.
