Chelsea chiefs have Eden Hazard belief over summer transfer return but have key demand

Chelsea: Tuchel’s interesting response to top four race

Chelsea are ‘very interested’ in re-signing Eden Hazard this summer and believe he can spearhead their current project, according to reports. Hazard has had a nightmare time at club level since completing his dream move to Real Madrid in 2019. The Belgian moved to the Bernabeu for an initial fee of £87.6million (€100m).

However, it could not have gone much worse for Hazard.

His time at Real has been dominated by injury problems, which have limited him to just 20 La Liga starts in his 18 months in Spain.

Hazard has scored just three league goals for Real and is set for another spell on the sidelines after picking up a muscle injury this week.

The 30-year-old has a contract with Los Blancos until the summer of 2024.

However, Spanish outlet Defensa Central claim Chelsea are willing to offer him an escape route.

The report says Chelsea chiefs are convinced Hazard’s bad luck with injuries would end if he were to return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea want a star to lead their project under the newly-appointed Thomas Tuchel and have identified Hazard.

However, the Blues are only willing to offer up to £43.8m (€50m) for Hazard, half of what they received for him two summers ago.

Chelsea spent big last summer, splashing out around £220m on new signings.

However, the west London club regressed under Frank Lampard, which led to the sacking of the legendary former midfielder in January.

Former Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel has been brought in partly to get the best out of German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who have so far failed to live up to their hefty price tags.

But Chelsea believe the further addition of Hazard will bring the quality the squad needs to fight for major honours.

Hazard first joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 and went on to have a glittering career in England.

He scored 110 goals in 352 appearances in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, an FA Cup and a League Cup.

Hazard has previously spoken of his desire to return to Chelsea one day.

“When I finish here [at Real] I’ll come back,” he said.

“I do my job here and then I come back.”
