Chris Sutton and former Chelsea star Joe Cole have heaped praise on Edouard Mendy following his recent outstanding performances.

Mendy joined Chelsea last year from Ligue 1 side Rennes and has since built a reputation as one of the best in his position following a string of impressive performances.

The Blues’ goalkeeper was named Man of The Match against Brentford last week after making a number of saves to deny the Bees an equaliser and help keep his side top of the Premier League table.

Mendy has received huge praise from Cole and Sutton – with the latter claiming the Senegalese has taken Chelsea to a new level since joining.

Speaking on BT Sport Sutton said: ‘Chelsea have gone up a level since Mendy’s come in, the shot-stopping is excellent. When I think of Kepa I think of a highly strung goalkeeper, with Mendy he’s always in control.

‘Some of these saves are incredible. He’s agile, he’s good with the ball at his feet.’

He added: ‘He (Mendy) is to Chelsea what Alisson has been to Liverpool.’

Cole also spoke highly of the 29-year-old but was cautious about comparing him to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker despite saying he’s one of the best keepers in the world.

The former Blues midfielder said: ‘You’re comparing him (Mendy) with the best in the world and he’s standing on the shoulders of giants.

‘We still need to see him for another year to say he’s one of the best but he’s definitely one of the best.’

‘You have to get the goalkeeper right, Chelsea have gone from there to Champions League winners.

Chelsea have played all the big guns, so he’s more than done his job. If he goes away with his national team and we miss him, the level could affect Chelsea. With Rudiger and Kante there’s better players to come in.’

Since joining the club, Mendy has kept 20 clean sheets in 35 games, conceding just 20 goals in that time.

Chelsea could extend their lead at the top of the table to four points with a win against struggling Norwich.
