Chelsea are likely to have another stab at landing Jules Kounde in January after coming close to luring in the young centre-back this summer. Sevilla eventually stood firm on their lofty valuation of the Frenchman, prompting the Blues to walk away from the deal, but their interest is unlikely to die down for good.

After weeks of negotiations, Sevilla were insistent on recouping all of the player’s £68million release clause which was deemed a bridge too far by Chelsea.

Although attached to a precocious talent, that price-tag was simply too expensive for the Blues given that the defender who had just made way in their squad was a peripheral figure in Kurt Zouma.

As proven by Manchester City’s failed attempt to sign Kounde in the summer of 2020, Sevilla are a stubborn club to deal with when it comes to their star defender.

Still, The Guardian claim that Chelsea will give it another go in January, and Express Sport takes a look at three players who could be used to sweeten the deal.

What better way for Chelsea to entice Sevilla into doing business than to put a potential Kounde replacement right in front of them.

The former France under-21 international has become something of a forgotten figure at Stamford Bridge after signing as a free agent last summer.

Still, the 22-year-old centre-back had the talent to break into the Nice first-team as a teenager, where he went on to make over 100 appearances before switching to west London.

With Thomas Tuchel clearly not taken, the German tried to find another loan destination for him before deadline day, although as it stands, the youngster will be on Chelsea’s books until at least January.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

The 25-year-old was another figure who looked as though he may seal a loan move before the transfer deadline, although it was not to be.

Loftus-Cheek may find it difficult to gain significant minutes in the heart of midfield under Tuchel, given that Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and even new signing Saul Niguez sit ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite his talent, he would not be a huge loss to Chelsea’s squad due to the availability of other top-class options.

Sevilla, meanwhile, could be tempted by the prospect of signing Loftus-Cheek given their ageing contingent of midfielders.

Andreas Christensen

In many ways, a swap involving Christensen and Kounde would be as ‘like-for-like’ as Chelsea could offer, with the Dane comfortable on the ball and not built like a typical centre-half.

Although the Blues would surely be keen to trade a fringe player to Sevilla rather than a first-team regular like Christensen, Kounde will not be easy to prise away from the La Liga side.

The 25-year-old has started all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games this campaign, but Tuchel has rotated his centre-back options in the past.

Usually found playing in the centre of a back three while Kounde would be best suited on the right, Chelsea’s boss may have to reshuffle their defensive line if Christensen makes way as part of the deal.
