Chelsea have reportedly joined the race for Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa, who was the subject of talks between the Bundesliga club and Aston Villa earlier in the window. The two Premier League sides have both been in the market for a new full-back before Villa stepped in to sign Lucas Digne from Everton for £25million following his fallout with former manager Rafael Benitez.

Chelsea were interested in Digne but preferred a loan, a deal Everton were not prepared to sanction.

Meanwhile, Villa had also explored other targets before sealing the signing of the 28-year-old World Cup winner.

One was Bologna’s Scotsman Aaron Hickey while Stuttgart’s Croatian international Sosa was also on their shortlist.

According to Sky Germany’s Marc Behrenbeck, Chelsea are now eyeing the 24-year-old defender, who Villa held negotiations for earlier in the window.

The flying wing-back is rated as one of the best of his ilk in the Bundesliga.

He registered a staggering nine assists in 26 league outings last term.

This season he has one goal and three assists to his name this season with his value now believed to be worth around £25m.

Chelsea are not giving up in their pursuit of a new left-back as cover for Ben Chilwell, who will now miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

Kenedy has been recalled from his loan stint with Flamengo as a backup option as so far, the Blues have failed in their efforts to recall Emerson Palmieri from his spell with Lyon.

The initial agreement did not include a recall option, something that has come back to haunt Chelsea.

Lyon have rejected several offers of compensation from the European champions to send Emerson back to west London.

Slowly but surely, Chelsea are now being forced to explore other avenues.

One of which is Derby’s Dylan Williams, with the 18-year-old left-back expected to arrive in due course.

Williams is expected to join up with the academy side but with options limited at left-back, he could be fast-tracked into the first-team fold.

Marcos Alonso is expected to remain first-choice for now but the Spaniard has looked jaded in recent weeks.

Malang Sarr has also shown he is capable of slotting in as a makeshift full-back if required.
