Chelsea offer Jorginho a contract 'renewal proposal'

Chelsea offer Jorginho a contract ‘renewal proposal’ with the midfielder ‘giving priority’ to the Blues… but the Italy star would also ‘be happy’ with a potential Napoli approach ahead of his current deal ending in the summer

  • Jorginho’s current contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season
  • It was thought the Blues were targeting a younger squad under Graham Potter
  • Yet the player’s agent Joao Santos claims a new deal is on the table for Jorginho
  • Newcastle also monitoring the 31-year-old who would consider a Napoli return

Chelsea have offered Jorginho an extended contract beyond the end of the season according to the midfielder’s agent.

The Italy international’s current deal expires in the summer and with the Blues targeting younger midfielders, including the World Cup star Enzo Fernandez, it was thought the 31-year-old’s time at Stamford Bridge was coming to a close.

However, according to Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos, there has been a ‘renewal proposal’ from the west London outfit over keeping him at the club.

Jorginho has been offered a new deal to stay at Chelsea according to his agent Joao Santos

‘Jorginho’s deal expires on June 30, we have a renewal proposal and we give priority to Chelsea, he claimed via TuttoMercato.

Santos also added that Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli also highly rates Jorginho but admitted there had been no contact from the Serie A leaders.

‘Naples represented our home in Italy, Giuntoli greatly appreciates the boy, for us it is a special square.

Graham Potter wants a younger squad at Blues but is content to keep Jorginho at the club

‘If there was a new interest we would be happy, but at the moment Napoli have not had contact with us’.

Blues boss is still keen to reduce the average age of the squad and that could allow Newcastle to snap up the experienced star who has won the Champions League with the Blues as well as Euro 2020 with Italy since arriving in England back in 2018 from Napoli.

The Magpies are flying high in third in the Premier League and Eddie Howe could consider Jorginho’s experience as vital as he looks to turn the North East side into future title contenders.

The 31-year-old has helped Chelsea win the Champions League since joining in 2018

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe though is also weighing up a move for the Italy international

As well as a younger stars, Potter is also keen on boosting his side’s fire power that has struggled to produce goals this term as they reside eighth in the Premier League and six points off the top four.

Chelsea have scored just 19 goals this term – at least four fewer than any other team inside the top 10.

The Blues had been looking at a potential loan move for Atletico Madrid’s out of favour Joao Felix but have along with Manchester United baulked at the Spanish side’s demand of an £8m loan fee until the end of the season.

Chelsea though have completed the £8m signing of Ivorian wonderkid David Datro Fofana from Norwegian side Molde in their first January deal.
