Chelsea owner Boehly sent Potter appeal with board ‘split’ on sack

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been urged to continue to stick by Graham Potter after a recent upturn in form. Unai Emery takes his Aston Villa side to Stamford Bridge on Saturday and the Spaniard has had some nice words to say about his managerial colleague.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions. Victory over Leeds at the beginning of March ended a run of just one win in 11 matches in 2023.

Reports from the Mail at the time claimed the Blues board were split over whether to sack Potter. Owner Boehly was one of only a few to be still behind the former Brighton boss.

Potter’s side were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to struggling Everton last time out before the international break. But Emery is seeing signs of improvement and has given high praise to Potter ahead of the weekend’s clash.

Emery said: “They (Chelsea) have very good players and their coach (Potter) is amazing. His work in Brighton was amazing and he needs time to adapt his ideas to Chelsea. Progressively, they are doing better.

“He deserved to take a step ahead with a team like Chelsea – They are progressing, and everything he did in Brighton he can do in Chelsea.

“He needs time, he needs matches and to know his players better. They played very well in the Champions League. In the Premier League, they’re not keeping the balance of being consistent in the table.”

Villa are level on points with 10th-placed Chelsea, only behind on goal difference. Emery’s side are in a similar run of form to their opponents, as they are unbeaten in their last four.

They have also won three of those games and Emery is looking forward to a tough test in west London. He added: “For us, Saturday is a match against one of the best teams in the Premier League, with a very good coach, with very good players.

“It’s a very good challenge, and I came here because I want to play against the best teams. We are in the same position.

“We are 11th but are close and with the same points as Chelsea. We are close to teams that are having a very good season – Fulham, Brentford, Brighton. We are excited by the prospect, for the first time, to be close to them.”
