Chelsea risk ‘losing’ Pochettino deal as pressure builds on Boehly

Lampard admits Chelsea 'got what they deserved' at Arsenal

Chelsea could still miss out on appointing Mauricio Pochettino with next week reportedly viewed as crucial in deciding the Argentine’s future. Pochettino is apparently still liked by Real Madrid amid claims that the Spanish giants could soon sack Carlo Ancelotti.

Real have endured a tough campaign under the Italian, failing to build on their Champions League success last term. Should they be on the brink of exiting the competition by losing the first leg of their semi-final clash with Manchester City next Tuesday, they could dismiss Ancelotti in the summer.

That would leave the La Liga outfit searching for a new head coach. President Florentino Perez would supposedly prefer to appoint Pochettino.

Chelsea hope to have a deal for the former Tottenham boss wrapped up very soon. However, they could be beaten to the 51-year-old if Real enter the market for a new manager.

According to the Independent, Pochettino is Perez’s ‘top choice’ should the Real job become available. The report adds that Chelsea are ‘close’ to appointing the ex-Paris Saint-Germain tactician but an agreement is not yet completely finalised.

The Blues conducted a thorough search for a new head coach after sacking Graham Potter in early April. Pochettino emerged as an early favourite alongside Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.

Co-owner Todd Boehly is said to have been ‘blown away’ by how perfectly Pochettino fits the requirements for the job. His development of several young players at Spurs – and turning the North Londoners into genuine title contenders – is viewed as being exactly what Chelsea need.

The American will therefore hope that a deal for Pochettino can be wrapped up very soon. Otherwise, Chelsea risk Real Madrid – and other big European clubs – entering the new market for a manager come the end of the season.

Boehly is already searching for his third permanent manager during the month in which he celebrates a year since his takeover of the West Londoners. Thomas Tuchel was sacked just a month into the campaign, with Potter seen as a long-term replacement.

However, results under the former Brighton boss made his job untenable. He was sacked last month with the Blues in mid-table.

Frank Lampard has scarcely fared much better since being appointed as interim head coach. The club legend has lost each of his first six matches since returning to the club.

Chelsea are 12th in the Premier League. Lampard’s side travel to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
