Cristiano Ronaldo could face FIFA punishment after tantrum on Portugal duty

Cristiano Ronaldo could face punishment from FIFA after reacting furiously to Portugal’s disallowed winner against Serbia on Saturday night.

The Portugal captain was left incensed when he was denied a crucial goal in stoppage time, which would have handed his country a 3-2 victory in their World Cup qualifying clash.

Yet despite replays appearing to show his effort creeping over the line before Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic hooked it clear, the officials decided against awarding Ronaldo the goal.

They were also unable to turn to goal-line technology at the Red Star Stadium as it was not in use on the night.

When the goal was not given, Ronaldo threw a major tantrum which could now land him in hot water with FIFA.

The Juventus superstar screamed at an assistant referee before throwing his captain’s armband on the floor and storming off the pitch.

According to Corriere dello Sport, he could receive a sanction from FIFA if they deem his actions to have been ‘offensive or violent conduct’.

Article 11 in the Disciplinary Code reads: “Associations and clubs, as well as their players, officials or any other member or person performing a function on their behalf, must comply with the Laws of the Game, the FIFA Statutes and the regulations, directives, guidelines, circulars and the decisions of FIFA; likewise, they must comply with the principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity.”
