Cristiano Ronaldo was slammed as “pathetic” on commentary during Portugal’s Euro 2020 win – right before he had a record-breaking day.
The Portuguese captain scored two goals in his country’s 3-0 win over Hungary to get their campaign started with a win.
But they had to work for the goals, with all the goals for the holders coming after the 80-minute mark.
And it saw Celtic legend Chris Sutton take a fierce dig at the forward – but get forced to go back on it live on commentary.
With 58 minutes on the clock at 0-0, Ronaldo had gone down in Hungary’s penalty box following a slight nudge as the referee ignored calls for a penalty.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live , the 48-year-old lambasted him with: “Oh wow, that was absolutely pathetic Ronaldo. Come on!!!
“What are you playing at? Dear me, he’s better than that.”
Half an hour later, though, Ronaldo had scored his second goal of the game following a slotted penalty.
It meant the 36-year-old had scored in five consecutive Euros, nine consecutive major tournaments and become the continental competitions’ all-time top scorer with 11 goals.
Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo will lift the Euro 2020 trophy, win the Golden Boot or do both? Let us know in the comments section.
And it saw Sutton have to change his tune, with: "Just wow. Ronaldo walks on water doesn't he.
“Goes around [Peter] Gulacsi, the goalkeeper, and pokes it in into the empty net.
“Classy finish and classy play from Ronaldo. Absolutely stunning that movement and finish."
Ronaldo’s goals also means he has 106 for his country, only three behind the all-time top scorer on the international stage in Iran’s Ali Daei.
He is looking to lift the Henri Delauney Trophy for consecutive tournaments, lifting a 32nd major title in his career which has taken him to Manchester United, Real Madrid and now Juventus.
But the 36-year-old was not happy during the game, spotted fuming at team-mate Diogo Jota after just five minutes of play at the Ferenc Puskas Arena, Budapest.
The forward found himself on the edge of the penalty area in a strong position and opted to shoot, despite the onrushing Ronaldo appearing to have space ahead of him and calling for the ball.
