A potentially sensational return to Manchester United by Cristiano Ronaldo has moved a step closer after Max Allegri detailed his plans for Juventus going forward. Ronaldo is reportedly ready to leave Italy after a disappointing season in which The Old Lady barely managed to finish in the top four of Serie A.

While the Portuguese superstar has enjoyed another remarkable individual campaign, finishing as Italy’s top scorer, it has not been a good season for the team as a whole.

Playing under first time coach Andrea Pirlo, Juve lost six games in the league to squeeze into fourth-placed on the final day.

They also suffered a shock defeat to Porto at the Last 16 Stage of the Champions League, with Juve having failed to make it past the quarter finals since Ronaldo joined the club.

That failure to win either Serie A or the Champions League this season cost Pirlo his job and has left Ronaldo ready to leave Turin.

The Portugal international is entering the final year of his contract at Juventus and if the Italian side want to recoup any of the £100million they paid for him, this will be the window to sell.

Only a handful of European teams would be able to afford the expected high fee and Ronaldo’s exorbitant wages.

One of those clubs is United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer open to bringing in someone of Ronaldo’s experience to Old Trafford.

The attacker had a highly-successful six-year spell at the Red Devils earlier in his career, becoming one of the best players in world football and winning three Premier League titles.

Ronaldo would almost certainly transform Solskjaer’s side into title contenders, having become a serial title winner over his career.

Such a return has now moved a step closer after Allegri, Pirlo’s replacement as Juventus manager, outlined his plans for the club.

Allegri has returned to the Allianz Stadium following a two-year break from football after his first spell as Juventus manager ended in 2019.

The Italian ended that period in charge as one of Juventus’ most successful ever managers, winning five successive Serie A titles.

Allegri was manager of Juventus during Ronaldo’s first season at the club, though the two appeared to have a fractious relationship.

It appears that relationship has shown no signs of being improved as Allegri works to put plans in place to return Juventus to the top of Serie A.

Goal Italia report that during Allegri’s discussions, Ronaldo was “not mentioned”, with Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala instead talked about.

That report suggests that Ronaldo’s time in Turin is indeed up, handing United a major boost in their pursuit of the superstar.
