Diego Costa and Hulk help Atletico Mineiro to domestic double

Veteran strike duo Diego Costa and Hulk help Atletico Mineiro to superb domestic double… as Brazilian giants breeze past Athletico Paranaense 6-1 to add cup trophy to their league title and spark wild celebrations

  • Atletico Mineiro have won the Copa do Brasil and Brazilian Serie A league title
  • The Brazilian side beat Athletico Paranaense 6-1 on aggregate for cup victory
  • A few days earlier Mineiro had lifted their first domestic league title in 50 years
  • Brasileirao top scorer Hulk and strike partner Diego Costa fired them to wins

Veteran strike duo Hulk and Diego Costa lifted Atletico Mineiro to a Brazilian domestic double after winning the league title by a dominant 13 points before beating Athletico Paranaense to claim the cup too.

Just four months after returning to his native Brazil, Diego Costa became a Serie A champion after he and strike partner Hulk fired Atletico Mineiro to their first title in five decades last week.

A few days later, the Brazilian side completed the domestic double as a dominant 6-1 win on aggregate over Athletico Paranaense saw them lift the Copa do Brasil on Wednesday.

The Brazilian side followed up their league win with 6-1 victory on aggregate over Athletico Paranaense in the Copa do Brasil

The only other side to have completed the feat is local rivals Cruzeiro in 2003, who, to add to Mineiro’s party, are currently languishing in the second division.

Atletico sparked their cup final triumph with a 4-0 rout as they hosted Athletico Paranaense in the first leg on Sunday.

Hulk scored a penalty to break the deadlock before winger Keno’s strike and Eduardo Vargas’s brace completed a comfortable win.

Hulk’s attacking prowess saw him steam towards the Player of the Year and Top Scorer awards

The veteran striker also rounded off the triumph as he found the back of the net in the second leg to secure a 2-1 win and cup victory.

His partner up front, Costa, unfortunately missed out on the goalscoring rampage as he limped off injured in the early stages of Sunday’s first leg but his contributions to Mineiro’s league campaign are not to be overlooked.

The former Chelsea forward played a limited role joining mid-season in August after not playing for the majority of 2021, but it was an extremely useful one.

Since joining the Brazilian side in August, Costa has become a Serie A and cup champion

The 33-year-old chipped in with a haul of four goals in 15 league appearances, as well as scoring in their cup semi-final win over Fortaleza.

But former Porto bruiser Hulk was the real hero of the season and his 27 goals were the key to title and cup success for the Belo Horizonte club.

The 35-year-old’s haul was also enough to crown him the Brasileirao’s top scorer by a comfortable margin and ensured he had no rivals for the Player of the Year award.

While Costa has scooped up league titles in three countries, his team-mate Hulk has gone one better, boasting wins in Portugal, Russia, China and now Brazil.

Only the Copa Libertadores was a disappointment in a magical season for Atletico as Cuca’s side were eliminated in a tense semi-final tie by eventual winners Palmeiras.
