Edinson Cavani’s refusal of request from Man Utd left Jadon Sancho ‘confused’

Edinson Cavani was 'put out' at the idea of handing Manchester United's No.7 shirt to Jadon Sancho upon his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, according to reports.

Cavani, 34, took the No.7 shirt when he joined United on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain last year, and he certainly proved worthy of the famous number.

The Uruguay striker enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals in 39 games to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men secure a second-place Premier League finish.

Yet despite that solid goalscoring return, it is believed he was asked to give the No.7 to Sancho following the completion of his £73million transfer from Dortmund in the summer.

And according to The Athletic, the request did not go down well with Cavani, who refused to hand over his preferred number to a player 13 years his junior.

Sancho was said to have been left rather confused about the situation, having been promised No.7 during his unsuccessful negotiations with United in 2020 before receiving the same message this time around.

Instead, the England international was forced to settle for the No.25 shirt, with the idea being that he would switch to No.7 when the final year of Cavani's contract expires in 2022.

That was before United sanctioned the last-minute signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in the final few days of the summer transfer window, a knock-on effect of Manchester City pursuing their arch-rivals' club legend.

Ronaldo rocked back up at Old Trafford and, being the superstar that he is, demanded his favourite No.7 shirt.

Unlike with Sancho, Cavani had no qualms with giving the number to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and switching to No.21.

Sancho's shirt dispute preceded what has been a difficult start to life in the Premier League for the ex-City academy star.
