  • Now the Argentina goalkeeper has outlined how he told Mbappe to ‘get up’

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has revealed he told Kylian Mbappe to ‘get up and look forward’ in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup final.

The duo were their nations heroes in the trophy-encounter with the Aston Villa shot-stopper sensationally denying two of France’s penalty-takers, while PSG talisman Mbappe scored a hattrick in open play before also converting in the shootout.

Martinez is one of Argentina’s main protagonists and was again pulling out all the mind games to get the better of France in the final, but despite winding up opponents and his crude celebration with the tournament’s Golden Glove trophy, he also took time to console Mbappe.

The Argentina World Cup winner was seen speaking to the downtrodden striker on the pitch after the final and has revealed what was said in their short exchange.

‘I told him to get up and to look forward,’ Martinez told TyC sports.

‘He shouldn’t be on the floor, but proud of the game he had played, which is the truth. He scored four goals on me. The one who should be on the floor is me.’

Those comments come as a surprise given Martinez’s post-match celebrations that saw him mock the Frenchman who had just scored four goals past him.

The 30-year-old begun his tirade by calling on his Argentina team-mates to hold a minutes silence for Mbappe in the dressing room as the World Cup trophy got passed around.

That was in apparent response to Mbappe’s pre-tournament comments that saw him claim European nations had an advantage.

However, that was only the starting point with Martinez then taking things a step further as he held a baby doll with Mbappe’s face taped over it as Argentina took an open-top bus parade through Buenos Aires.

Mbappe later revealed that Martinez’s post-World Cup celebrations didn’t bother him

Martinez was crucial to Argentina’s success as he saved two penalties in the final shootout

He then tried to downplay those celebrations, explaining: ‘I held it [baby doll] for like two minutes and I threw it away, that’s all.

‘How can I make fun of Mbappe? He scored four past me. Four goals in a final! He must think I am his toy baby! I have huge respect for Mbappe.’

The 24-year-old French forward took a mature approach to the forward’s attempt at humour and later stated he ‘doesn’t waste energy on such futile things’.

Although that didn’t stop Mbappe cutting a cold look when Martinez was awarded FIFA’s ‘The Best’ goalkeeper award at an awards ceremony in Paris on Monday.
