England Women’s World Cup star plans huge London party if Lionesses beat Spain

England striker Alessia Russo insists they plan to party big when they arrive home if they are victorious in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final. There will be a mega parade on the streets of London if Sarina Wiegman’s side are successful in winning the tournament for the first time.

World Cup: Russo scores England's third goal against Australia

Russo is in line to start against Spain after scoring the clinching goal in Wednesday’s semi-final win over co-hosts Australia. She was part of the Lionesses squad which won Euro 2022 just 13 months ago.

England were playing on home soil for that tournament, with much of the crowd at Wembley supporting the hosts. It has been a different scenario Down Under, especially against the Matildas in midweek.

Russo has been made aware of the World Cup fever back home. She is grateful for the support and has promised to put on a huge party if they return with the trophy.

She said: “People keep telling us that the support back home is amazing. We’re so grateful. Our fans mean a lot to us.

“Obviously, we feel a little disconnected from it right now as all our focus is on the game. But hopefully, we can see them and celebrate with them when we get back.

“The support for women’s football is crazy at the moment. It’s so nice to see – and we’re so grateful.”

Two of Russo’s three tournament goals have come in the knockout stages. But scoring on Sunday will top all of them and she admits to having flashbacks to her childhood as her dreams come close to being realised.

Russo added: “This is the biggest game, the one you dream about and the one that means the most. I think it will hit when we’re in the tunnel and ready to walk out.

“It’s an incredible occasion, it’s been an unbelievable tournament and this is it. This is the moment we want to be in. We can’t wait.

“It takes me back to when I was a kid we used to play World Cup in the garden so we had to score to stay in. I have such fond memories with the local kids and also my brothers and my youth teams.

“We were just having fun and playing free. As a kid, growing up to think you’re playing in a World Cup final in a couple of days is a special feeling.

“It’s a real ‘pinch-me’ moment.”
