Erik ten Hag is reportedly as abrupt with his Manchester United players as he is with the media. Ten Hag has been short and to the point with the press since being appointed as Ralf Rangnick’s successor at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has a huge task on his hands to turn fortunes around at United. The Red Devils missed out on Champions League qualification last season by a considerable margin.

Tottenham and Arsenal have improved further this summer to make finishing in the top four an even tougher task for the Red Devils. Ten Hag means business and is seemingly determined to give it his best shot.

He has often given short and abrupt answers in his few press conferences to date. But the Manchester Evening News claims a dressing room source says his ‘brusque nature’ is the same with the players.

Ten Hag is said to be ‘feeling out’ the United squad during pre-season. There have been victories in both the pre-season friendlies to date over Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

As always, not much can be read into these results. But it would undoubtedly have been a different narrative if those victories were defeats.

Ten Hag is stepping up his transfer business, too. Lisandro Martinez has become the third player through the door following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

Frenkie de Jong is the top midfield target, which would make it four signings from four who have a Dutch or Ajax background if he were to join. Ten Hag is certainly making his mark.

“I think I have a clear idea about strategy,” he told the media in Melbourne. “The way I want to play football but also in the way a top football club has to be structured.

“We talked about those ideas and we agreed on the structures and the way we play football. Now we have to implement that.”

Ten Hag also believes the confidence is lacking in the United squad, something that he needs to lift. He added: “Yes, I think so.

“You can see that it affects the players. Now we have to cheer them up and we have to motivate them.

“We are trying to bring the confidence back. That is one of the important points to get success, that you have self-belief as an individual and, of course, as a team.”
