Erik ten Hag is said to have identified three players to take over as Manchester United captain should Harry Maguire be stripped of the armband.
Maguire's position in the team, let alone as skipper, is in major doubt following his nightmare campaign. So it looks likely that there will be a new leader for the Red Devils next season.
According to ESPN, David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the candidates if Ten Hag does decide to make a change. It's claimed the squad are split over whether Maguire should continue as captain, with Ralf Rangnick suggesting a vote.
Maguire could be dropped due to his lack of pace and Ten Hag's preference for a high defensive line. Reports have linked the new manager with a move for centre-backs Jurrien Timber of Ajax and Villarreal's Pau Torres.
Options for who could take over from the England defender as skipper are limited. De Gea is United's second-longest serving player behind Phil Jones, but his ability to play out from the back is under question too.
Who would you choose for United's new captain? Let us know in the comments section.
Ronaldo is Portugal captain but has never been a full-time club captain in his career. And attacking midfielder Fernandes doesn't appear a natural option for the role.
Ten Hag is yet to make a decision and remained coy on Maguire's position during his first press conference in charge on Monday (May 23).
He said: "Next season is a different season, but he did a great job, he is a great player, he already achieved a lot with his contribution to Manchester United. I’m looking forward to working with him."
The Dutchman was also asked if Ronaldo was part of his plans, to which he replied: "Of course." Asked what he can expect from the club legend, Ten Hag said: "Goals." He added: "I will speak to Ronaldo about that before I speak to you."
