Donny van de Beek will be handed a Manchester United lifeline following Erik ten Hag's appointment as the club's new manager.

United confirmed Ten Hag as their new boss in a statement on Thursday. And his summer arrival could give a chance to some of Old Trafford's forgotten stars – not least Van de Beek.

The Dutch midfielder forged his reputation under Ten Hag at Ajax before his disastrous £39million move to United two years ago. But there could now be light at the end of the tunnel for Van de Beek following his fellow countryman's appointment as Ralf Rangnick's successor.

According to The Sun, Ten Hag will bring the 25-year-old 'in from the cold' next year. The duo developed what is described as a 'close relationship' during their time together at Ajax.

The facts certainly bear that out. Together they won a league and cup double during the 2018-19 season, with the blonde midfielder key to Ajax's play. He scored 41 goals and provided 34 assists in 175 appearances for the Dutch giants before his ill-fated move to Old Trafford.

It is claimed that Ten Hag still holds Van de Beek in 'high regard' despite his struggles since arriving at United. The new Red Devils boss also believes that Van de Beek suits the style of football he hopes to implement when he does take charge in the summer.

Van de Beek is currently on loan at Everton after being allowed to leave Old Trafford in January. He has made just 50 appearances for United since the move from Ajax two years ago, only 19 of which have been starts.

The 19-cap Netherlands international will be hoping his ex-manager's appointment at the 13-time Premier League champions heralds a change in his fortunes from next season onwards.

United confirmed Ten Hag as their next manager in a statement on Thursday morning. The Ajax boss told the clubs' official website: "It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead.

"I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

"It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United."
