Everton boss Rafa Benitez wants to make Kalidou Koulibaly his first signing at his new club. The Spaniard knows the defender well from his time coaching Napoli.

Everton boss Benitez has requested a transfer for Koulibaly this summer to mark his arrival at Goodison Park.

And a deal could be struck with Napoli worth just £35m after a dramatic decrease in his value.

The Senegal international has long been heralded as one of the best defenders in the world.

His talent has attracted many suitors over the years, particularly from the Premier League, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all linked.

But Napoli have always stuck to their guns in the transfer window and refused to lower their valuation – which club chief Aurelio de Laurentiis once rose to over £100m.

However, that has changed this summer with the Serie A outfit in need of money and now willing to cash in on one of their most valuable assets.

According to 90min, Koulibaly could be available for as little as £35m and Benitez is keen on the signing.

The Spaniard signed the 30-year-old back in 2013 when he was manager of Napoli and has helped him become the player he is today.

And Benitez has told the Everton board that he would like to be reunited with the former Genk star.

Defence is an area the new Toffees boss wants to reinforce with concerns over the current crop.

Yerry Mina has been linked with an exit this summer which would leave the club with just three options in Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate.

Koulibaly’s contract ends in 2023 but Napoli chief De Laurentiis has asked the player to take a pay cut amid the Covid crisis.

Many clubs across the world have been stricken by the pandemic with Serie A particularly hit hard.

Everton have also been linked with Chelsea star Kurt Zouma and Newcastle ace Allan Saint-Maximin.
