Fans adamant Howe to Everton and Benitez to Newcastle ‘written in the stars’

Fans are adamant that a transfer merry-go-round involving Eddie Howe and Rafa Benitez that would see them take charge at Everton and Newcastle United, respectively, is "written in the stars".

Newcastle have been without a manager since the clubs new owners sacked Steve Bruce two weeks ago but were reportedly down to their final two candidates this week.

The club were deciding between Villarreal manager Unai Emery and former Bournemouth boss Howe to replace Bruce, however, first choice Emery is now understood to have reservations over taking over.

This has led to some fans clamouring for Benitez to return to St. James' Park for a second spell as manager.

Benitez has been in charge of Everton but a promising start has been followed by just one win in their last six and three defeats in a row.

Following Monday's loss away to Wolves, rumours have started to circulate linking Benitez with the sack as the Toffees now sit in 10th place in the table.

On Wednesday morning it was reported that Howe, who has been unemployed since leaving Bournemouth in 2020, was in Liverpool.

This led to a number of fans speculating that the former Cherries boss is set to replace Benitez, opening the door for the Spaniard to return to Newcastle.

One fan wrote on Twitter: "Eddie Howe to Everton Rafa to Newcastle… written in the stars."

Another reacted to the rumours by asking: "Benitez to Newcastle and Howe to Everton?"

A third supporter added: "What's this then? Benitez to Newcastle and Howe to Everton? Either that or he's off to the Cavern Club."

Another fan was shocked as they tweeted: "Rafa to Newcastle and Howe to Everton? Surely not", followed by a surprised emoji.

Benitez was a fan favourite during his three years as Newcastle boss between 2016 and 2019, despite failing to save the club from relegation in 2015/16.

He guided them back to the Premier League as champions at the first attempt and followed it up with consecutive mid-table finishes despite limited transfer funds.

When he left at the end of the 2018/19 season for the Chinese Super League, he had a win rate of 42%, the club's best since Chris Hughton left the club in 2010.
