Fans blast Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren as he struggles to live with Gareth Bale

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren was trolled by football fans during Croatia’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Wales.

Wales and Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale eased past Lovren to equalise for the hosts shortly before half-time.

He opened himself up to a backlash, after previously claiming that he deserves to be recognised as one of the best defenders in the world.

“Lovren, the self-styled ‘one of the best defenders in the world’ fails to stop Bale and it’s 1-1,” tweeted one fan.

Another said: “Gareth Bale scoring and leaving worlds best defender Dejan Lovren on his a*** like a fool? Love to see it.”

“Bale humiliating Lovren! Always a nightmare for him,” added another supporter.

“Lovren got smoked by Bale,” another football fan tweeted.

“What a goal by Bale. Done Lovren all over there,” said another fan.

One Twitter user simply wrote: “Bale sitting Lovren down hahahaha.”

Bale has previously scored against Lovren in a crucial match; namely during the 2018 Champions League final.

The Welshman scored twice, including a terrific bicycle kick, for Real Madrid in their 3-1 win over the Reds.

That summer, Lovren would play a key role in Croatia’s progression to the World Cup final in Russia.

After Croatia beat England in the World Cup semi-final, Lovren claimed that he deserved more respect.

“Sometimes, the criticism is unfair and people should respect me also,” he said.

“Without being arrogant I think I have [been proved to be one of the best defenders in the world]. Definitely.”

Croatia are top of Group E in qualifying for the European Championships, while Wales are fourth.
