‘The BBC even airing this and having the audacity to call it Match of the Day is actually embarrassing’: Fans blast ‘soulless’ Premier League highlights without pundits and commentators as they demand ‘#BringBackGary’ after Lineker’s on-air axing
- Sections of social media have slammed the BBC for airing Match of the Day
- The BBC decided to press ahead with Saturday’s show after axing Gary Lineker
- No pundits or match commentary featured on the football highlights episode
The BBC have been blasted by disgruntled viewers on social media over their decision to air Match of the Day on Saturday evening with no pundits, presenters, or commentary.
Lead presenter Gary Lineker was axed from Saturday’s broadcast over a recent tweet that saw him compare the UK Government’s planned policy over asylum seekers to ‘1930s Germany’.
His removal from the show was followed by co-hosts and commentators refusing to appear on Saturday’s football highlights show, with radio commentators and even some Premier League managers and players boycotting interviews with the organisation.
Now social media is having its say after the unusual action-only broadcast that saw a round-up from six Premier League fixtures, including Manchester City’s hard-fought win over Crystal Palace.
Lineker – who appeared at Leicester’s 3pm game against Chelsea – has received swathes of support for his actions as some questioned the BBC’s decision to go ahead with airing their latest MOTD episode.

The BBC aired Saturday’s episode without any pundits, hosts, or match commentators
The 62-year-old has been the iconic show host since first appearing as a guest in the 1990s, with some online sympathisers labelling the publicly-funded broadcaster as ’embarrassing’.
One post read: ‘The BBC even airing this and having the audacity to call it match of the day is actually embarrassing.
Another poked fun at Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah after his missed penalty ensured Bournemouth claimed a famous win over the Reds, tweeting: ‘Match of the Day’s no commentary is just bias towards Liverpool fans! Now they just have to close their eyes when Salah takes his penalty.
Further comments saw some critics slam the show as ‘dreadful’ with one user writing: ‘The ‘wish’ version of Match of the day!!! Dreadful no commentary highlights, like the EFL. #BringBackGary,’ while another rebuked the BBC for not cancelling tonight’s show, tweeting: ‘BBC should have taken the decision not to broadcast.
‘This is a barely believable embarrassment. Like their coverage, I’m totally speechless.
Others voiced their own commentary over the ‘silent’ clips as they attempted to mock the BBC’s strange showing of football highlights from around the grounds.
But some struck a more serious tone as one post branded the MOTD as ‘soulless’: ‘What even is this, this has to be the most soulless MOTD show ever broadcast, not even commentary on the matches.
Further damning posts followed as another pointed out the show was missing it’s iconic theme tune, stating: ‘Pathetic effort. Too ashamed to even play the music. #DavieResign #BringBackGary
While a final commenter listed a tirade of complaints at the show’s airing, writing online: ‘It’s weird, it’s wrong and it’s ruined Saturday night.
