- Manchester United suffered a jaw-dropping 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield
- Fans on social media branded their performance a ‘total collapse’ and ‘terrible’
- Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored two goals each
Manchester United have been branded ‘terrible’ by fans online following their 7-0 capitulation to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday night.
The Red Devils succumbed to their heaviest defeat since Boxing Day 1931 as Cody Gakpo continued his fine run of form and opened the scoring in the first-half with a stunning finish around David de Gea.
Darwin Nunez followed the Dutchman’s lead, heading in from close range, before Gakpo, just three minutes after, was back to polish off a stunning piece of individual work from Mohamed Salah, scoring his second goal of the night.
The Egyptian was at the heart of matters throughout, picking up a brace of goals himself, slamming his first in off the underside of the crossbar, just before Nunez also took his second to put six past Erik ten Hag’s side.
Roberto Firmino came on late in the game to round the scoring to 7-0 in what will be a night to forget for Manchester United, who, before the game, had been touted as contenders for the Premier League title.

Yet fans online have had their say, with many taking to Twitter to lambast United’s performance, with one asking: ‘Man United were suppose to be title contenders?’
Another added: ‘Man United back in your box. Has anyone seen Rashford? Casemiro? The little butcher? Gary Neville?’
Even Graham Souness after the match joked: ‘Can we not wait for Gary [Neville] to come back?’
Gakpo was the star of the show, with Carragher lauding the Dutchman for his excellent ‘composure’ striking home two stunning finishes.
The 24-year-old had snubbed Erik ten Hag’s side for the Merseyside club last December.
Darwin Nunez had also turned his back on a move to Man United last season and fans were also quick to point out that he was the orchestrator of Liverpool’s win.
One wrote: ‘There’s just something so poetic about both Gakpo and Nunez scoring a brace against man united after rejecting them.’

Other fans said: ‘Man United are Terrible’ while others logged in to sarcastically check on other United fans saying: ‘Man United fans feeling ok?’
While the loss is only their second this year, it will be a devastating sting to Manchester United’s momentum.
It will be the end to their incredible 11-match unbeaten run across all competitions, which includes their excellent performances against Barcelona and their Carabao Cup win against Newcastle.
Yet, the result keeps united nine points adrift of Manchester City who sit in second place in the Premier League table.
