Cristiano Ronaldo fluffed his lines from the penalty spot before scoring a dramatic late double to snatch victory for Portugal against Ireland – but fans think he shouldn't have been on the pitch.
Ronaldo missed his first big chance to become the all-time leading international goalscorer in men's football on Wednesday night, with Manchester City teenager Gavin Bazunu initially denying him the record by saving his effort from 12 yards.
The new Manchester United recruit let an opportunity to make history and level proceedings pass him by, yet he was perhaps fortunate to still be on the pitch at that point after replays caught him appearing to slap Ireland's Dara O'Shea before taking the penalty.
After Ronaldo put the ball down on the spot, O'Shea attempted to get in his head by kicking it away.
The Portugal captain reacted furiously and lashed out, throwing a slap at O'Shea which somehow went unpunished in the game.
Fans quickly took to social media to express their dismay at the incident, insisting Ronaldo should have been shown a red card.
Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo should have been sent off for the slap on Dara O'Shea? Let us know in the comments section below.
One asked: "How did Ronaldo get away with that slap".
Another wrote: "Red all day lmao".
A third pointed out: "Well in the premier league, that is a red card."
A fourth said: "Should be given a red card for this".
While one simply posed the question: "How is that not a red?".

Ronaldo only needed one more Portugal goal to break Iran legend Ali Daei's long-standing international goal record – and in the end he got two.
The former Real Madrid and Juventus man stole a dramatic win for Portugal late on, scoring twice in the dying minutes to move two goals clear of Daei's record and secure victory over Ireland.
Ireland fans will insist he should not have been on the pitch after slapping O'Shea early on, with the referee's failure to send him off costing them in the end.
Man Utd have already decided transfer priority for 2022 but will face competition
However, United fans still believe their new signing should not be placed on penalties this season after his miss earlier in the game.
Instead, the Red Devils faithful would prefer to see his Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes remain first-choice taker at Old Trafford.
